Tilda Lahiff (b. 2000) is a London-based artist working with oil paint.
Drawing inspiration from forgotten photos hoarded away in her cluttered phone camera roll and spurred by Roland Barthes theory of the ‘punctum’, Tilda Lahiff selects subtle, often unintentional detail within an image that elicits a sensation of disturbance, evoking a deeply personal and emotional response.
Through the transformation of forgotten digital moments into tangible works of art Tilda delves into the authenticity of human experience, uncovering hidden truths and emotions that often evade conscious awareness in the whirlwind of daily life.
Central to Tilda's practice is her meticulous process of painting, which transcends mere replication to imbue her works with layers of meaning and interpretation. Through the deliberate manipulation of elements such as cropping, scale, brushwork, and textured surfaces, she disrupts the original image, inviting viewers into a realm of introspection and reinterpretation. In essence, Tilda Lahiff's artistic practice serves as a profound exploration of the human condition, celebrating authenticity in everyday moments.
Tilda Lahiff is currently enrolled on the MA Fine Arts course at City & Guilds of London Art School (2023/24). She holds a BArch (2018/21) from the University of Nottingham. Working as director of partnership and curation at the international art guide, GalleriesNow, she also is co-founder of Crypt Collective, an artist-run collective in London.
